Tim Mara Artist's Alphabet

Y: You > 4. Collect examples of film stills and single frame images from movies you are familiar with.

back to the alphabet grid
  • When you look at these how do the isolated frames differ from the moving picture?
  • How does the activity of watching a film differ from the experience of viewing a still image such as a painting, photograph or print?
  • What compositional decisions, devices and choices have been made in this still image? Does it differ from your overall memory or understanding of the film?
  • Alternatively, you could take an individual isolated still image you are unfamiliar with and by analysing the information it presents to you try to develop a storyline, plot or narrative based on its possibilities. You could develop these in visuals or in written form, or a combination of these, in any possible direction being as imaginative as you would like.
