Archives and Special Collections, University of the Arts London

The University of the Arts London (UAL) comprises six colleges specialising in art, design, fashion, communication and the performing arts. The six colleges include: Camberwell College of Arts; Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design; Chelsea College of Art and Design; London College of Communication; London College of Fashion; and Wimbledon College of Art.

There are approximately eighty to ninety special collections held across the six colleges of the University which include items dating from the 1400s to the present day and cover a wide range of object types and subject matter. Many of the items have come as gifts or bequests from people who have had a close association with the University.

In 2007 a new purpose-built Archives and Special Collections Centre was opened at the London College of Communication (LCC) to house the Stanley Kubrick Archive as well as a number of other smaller collections. A Special Collections Peer Support Network has also been established to represent collections from all parts of the University, and meets regularly to share experiences and best practice.

A number of collections across the University have been digitised over the past decade and are available on the VADS website. These include the Central Saint Martins Museum and Study Collection; the Eckersley Archive at the Special Collections and Archives Centre; issues of the Design Journal and the Netherlands Decorated Books Collection both held at London College of Communication Library; the London College of Fashion College Archives, Woolmark Company Collection, Cordwainer Shoe Collection, Paper Patterns Collection, and the Gala Archive at London College of Fashion.

Other digital collections currently in development include: the Jocelyn Herbert Archive at Wimbledon School of Art; the Central Saint Martins Stage Costume Collection; the digitisation of student work from the 'Tell Us About It: Diverse Student Voices' project; and the digitisation of research outputs for the University's institutional repository, UAL Research Online.
