Bernard Leach

In 1932 he accepted the offer of employment at Dartington Hall, an inspirational venture set up by Leonard and Dorothy Elmhirst as part of an ambitious scheme of rural regeneration. Leach was to be employed to investigate the setting up of a commercial pottery at Dartington with a view to closing St Ives. However, the move to Dartington was propitious as Leach had become emotionally involved with Laurie Cookes, a worker at the Leach Pottery, and felt that his twenty-four year long marriage to Muriel was at an end.
