No 46: Bowl, 1975 (P.76.2)

This conical porcelain bowl is an example of Lucie Rie's most sophisticated, later work. It relies on the interplay of the shiny inner and the matt outer surface, which is treated with sgraffito decoration. The interior (and also the underside of the foot) is coated with a mixture of manganese and copper odixes, producing a smooth metallic surface; the unglazed exterior is incised with fine lines radiating upwards from the foot and inlaid with a soft crimson pigment.
