Michael Cardew

No 19: Plate, 1962 (P.74.126)

Made at Cardew's Wenford Bridge Pottery in Cornwall, this shallow plate is well known through its distinguished exhibition history and also appeared on the cover of Ceramic Review in 1979 (No.55). It is made of buff stoneware, brush-decorated with a long-legged bird (a heron or a flamingo) and bunches of grass in brown pigment. A flecked, grey ash glaze covers the plate, harmonising with the painted motifs.
