Description The front of this lively and colourful pocket is made of patchwork and the back is made of one piece of plain weave cotton or linen. The top is bound with a band of the same. Lengths of tape are attached to form the ties. The vertical opening is reinforced. The simple patchwork construction contains almost a hundred pieces in over thirty different patterns. The patterns probably date from the 1820s and 1830s or an even longer period. It could have been constructed from the hoarded contents of a family ragbag or from a dressmaker's scraps. Although patchwork could contain treasured pieces that told a personal history, there is also evidence that markets and drapers at this time sold new pieces intended for patchwork. Although not finely stitched, in this pocket care was taken in the placing of the pieces directly below the opening. By drawing attention to the piece of brown and pink floral print by tilting it into a diamond, the maker echoed the use of flowers below the opening in older embroidered pockets. There is much wear, tear and repair, suggesting this was a pocket well loved and used. Given the popularity and huge range of affordable and attractive printed cloths that were available during the period, there is no obvious reason why there are so few surviving pockets made of whole or patchwork printed linen or cotton.
