Description The mainly sandstone, gothic Broletto (town hall) stands in the Piazza Vecchia in Bergamo's Citta Alta (high city). Also known as the ‘Palazzo Vecchio' and ‘Palazzo della Ragione', it contained a library in the 1890s, hence Mackintosh's caption ‘the Biblioteca'. Mackintosh's diary entry for 17 June noted, ‘Library in square very good gothic.' The building dates from the twelfth century with modifications in the thirteenth and further reconstructions after fires in 1453 and 1513. After the last fire the structure was rebuilt between 1538 and 1543 by Pietro Isabello (c. 1490-1546). The Renaissance balcony, drawn by Mackintosh, dates from this period.
