Artist Mackintosh, Charles Rennie

This fine Renaissance house (c.1520), at Via Gaetano Donizetti 3, is attributed to local architect Pietro Isabello (c1490-1546). Part of Mackintosh's brief diary entry for Wednesday 17 June 1891: ‘Good renaissance in street right down from Cath.', is almost certainly a reference to it.

Mackintosh has made a thorough study of the street façade of this building, covering two adjacent pages of his sketch book. On the left hand sheet he has drawn three details of the centre ground floor window (top left, centre, and right centre); a first floor capital (top right); and a ground floor capital (bottom centre). At bottom left are details of the impost and base of the arched doorways either side of the central ground floor window; and a profile of the plinth (bottom right) which runs along the ground floor. The right hand sheet contains a drawing of the whole façade excepting the left hand bay. On the left of the sheet Mackintosh has drawn all of the building's cornices, dividing that for the ground floor into two, to fit it onto the page.
