Artist Mackintosh, Charles Rennie

Although Mackintosh was unimpressed by the seventeenth century interior of San Fedele, describing it as ‘very bad classic', he regarded the church's surviving Romanesque features as ‘very good' ('Diary', 26 June).

The drawing of the apse at the church's east end shows: elevation of a bay (left); and on right from top to bottom: profile of cornice; plan at arcade level; plan of top storey; profile of corbelled string-course; plan of middle storey; profile of lower string-course; profile of base.

Mackintosh adapted this detailed drawing as a staircase tower for his unexecuted 1892 competition design for Glasgow's Kelvingrove Art Gallery.
