Title Antwerp, Museum van Oudheden, studies of a bed
Collection Charles Rennie Mackintosh´s Northern Italian Sketchbook: Glasgow School of Art
Artist Mackintosh, Charles Rennie

Mackintosh made these studies in the Museum van Oudheden which was situated in the Steen. The early seventeenth century oak bed is now at the Vleeshuis Museum, Antwerp.

Mackintosh has drawn (top left) a detail of the side fascia of the canopy, its fringed curtain and bed-post. A profile detail of the canopy is shown (top right). The bed-end (lower right) and plan (bottom right); the detail (bottom left) might represent a profile of the baluster on the bed-end. These arcaded balusters provided a source for a detail in Mackintosh's doors for the Glasgow Art Club (1892-3) (see p. 91).
