Description The Steen, a castle dating from the eleventh century, on the site of an earlier fortification overlooking the River Scheldt, is the most ancient structure in the city. Mackintosh's drawing is of its oldest surviving façade. The castle had been purchased by the city of Antwerp in 1842 and had contained a museum of antiquities, the Museum van Oudheden, since 1864. Since 1958 it has been the home of the National Maritime Museum.
