This head and shoulders portrait of IsraŽls was painted by the subject himself and three of his contemporaries. On 1 June 1870 Jozef IsraŽls, accompanied by his wife, Aleida Schaap, arrived at the country home of John Forbes White, Seaton Cottage, on the outskirts of Aberdeen. There Reid, Chalmers and Cameron painted this three-quarter length portrait of IsraŽls. At the last sitting, IsraŽls seized the brush exclaiming, ßNow I will show you what Rembrandt would doß, and added some Ďmasterly strokes'.

Dedicated by the artists to White, this portrait can be seen as the physical embodiment of this crucial visit. It is illustrative of the close ties of friendship and artistic taste which these men shared. Epitomised by the dedication is White's pivotal role in the movement and the vital part he played as instigator and host of this convivial artistic meeting, which all the Scottish artists present must have perceived as a very significant moment in their lives.
