Description Bruycker was a Belgian painter of flowers, genre scenes, portraits and historical subjects. He often painted genre scenes in domestic interiors and in particular he favoured compositions of women with their young children. Here several women are gathered in a house to view a new baby. There is a Plak Almanach dated 1869 on the wall to the far left, suggesting a possible date for the painting. Similarly, the artist's signature inscription has been painted to look as though it is carved on the foot of the cradle. A similar work by Bruycker, entitled Gossip Below Stairs, shows women gathered around a table drinking tea and talking. One woman tilts on her chair so as to hear the conversation better, and it is just this sort of humorous incident, like the exclusion of the father from A Christening Party, that Bruycker liked to capture.
