Description The brown sash, the sword barely seen on the left, and the stick identify the sitter as a captain of the Civic Guard of Dordrecht, where Nicolaes Maes worked until his move to Amsterdam in 1673. The portrait is dated 1666, when a new mode of elite self-presentation was being produced in the Netherlands by painters like Maes and Caspar Netscher. The qualities of dignity, self-control, courage and professional identity that the sitter embodies in this painting denote his gentlemanly status.
