|Collection||Bowes Museum, Barnard Castle|
|Artist||Gudin, Théodore (French painter and printmaker, 1802-1880)|
|Description||A prestigious painter of marines, Gudin was a friend of the founders of the collection. The inscription shows that the painting was a gift from the artist to Joséphine Bowes. Apparently painted near Ostend, the view is depicted in the rosy hues of evening and looks out to sea through the haze. Several people are grouped on the dunes, watching the boats coming in to shore. A man stands prominently in his dark clothes and top hat while children clamber on the sandy slopes. Another figure walks across the foreground with what could be a rolled-up sail.|
