Description The landscape through which the Holy Family is passing is distinctly northern, with pines, blasted oaks and sunlit snow. In the ruins of a half-timbered hut Joseph has made a fire and is drying clothes. His saw lies across his basketful of sticks. Their ass chews what remains of the thatch. In the distance is a snow-covered valley.

Notes There may possibly have been an inscription on the front '1618'. However, it could be a misrecording; it is no longer visible. The curator in 1999, Andrew Barlow, wrote: I think perhaps this is a mistake which has been repeated over the years'. The painting was damaged around the edges in the 1960s-1970s, so it is just possible the inscription has been lost, but if so it must have been very near the edge.
