Artist Attributed to manner of Daubigny, Charles François (French landscapist, 1817-1878)
Date Earliest probably about 1865
Date Latest possibly about 1875
Description This river scene executed by a follower of Daubigny, a precursor of the Impressionists and a member of the Barbizon group of artists, resembles in composition Daubigny's Morning Effect on the Oise (1866, Musée des Beaux-Arts, Rouen) in reverse. Both works are concerned with atmospheric effects and simple compositions with the viewer placed on the bank. However, Daubigny's soft brushwork, delicate vision and preoccupation with the effects of light rather than the motif itself do not exist in this poor copy.
