Description In 1878 Monet moved to the small village of Vétheuil, on the river Seine, half-way between Paris and Rouen. The Franco-Prussian War had plunged France into an economic depression, and Monet, who had enjoyed a degree of success in the early 1870s, was suffering severe financial difficulties. Monet's stay at Vétheuil can, with hindsight, be seen as crucial in his development as a landscapist. This is one of several views Monet painted of the village from the Ile St Martin, a small island in the middle of the river Seine. Using small, hasty brushstrokes, he strives to capture the fleeting effects of light and movement of the ever-changing scene in front of him.
