Date 1882 (dated)
Description Boy Sitting in a Meadow is Georges Seurat's first large-scale work. The young peasant, silent and immobile against a simple grass background, is seen in near profile. The high horizon, the sheer depth of the pictorial space and the placing of the boy to the far right of the composition contribute to the awkwardness that emphasises the solitude of the boy. Gazing downwards, his hands idle, he ignores the scene before him, an island of dark and brooding in the midst of the glory of the strong sunshine that floods the landscape surrounding him. There is a deliberate use of contrasting tones, the bright yellow of the field against the purplish-green of the boy, and quick, flickering notes of mauve and orange bringing out subsidiary contrasts.
