Description Paris Bordone (1500-1571) painted the original Mystic Marriage of St. Catherine, of which this painting is a replica, in c. 1525 (oil on canvas, 194.0 x 260.0 cm, Doria Collection, Genoa). The composition, colouring and dramatic gestures of the figures show Titian's influence. In Vasari's Life Bordone is described as a pupil of the Venetian master. The clear drawing and strong correspondences with e.g. the Holy Family with St Ambrose presenting a donor' in which the figures of Joseph, Mary and Child are strongly reminiscent of the Mystic Marriage, indicate an early work in Bordone's oeuvre. The Glasgow copy appears to be a good quality, contemporary copy. Further research into the provenance and technical condition could lead to a more accurate date and attribution.
