Description The painter responsible for this portrayal of a young woman was a French artist who worked under the name Alexis Vollon, to differentiate himself from his father Antoine, who was also a painter. Alexis began exhibiting at the Paris Salon in 1885 with intimate family scenes and still lives, although he did not achieve the success of his father. The composition of this painting, with the subject seated at a table, is one to which Vollon turned on other occasions. It reflects the artist's interest in the work of the eighteenth-century French painter of domestic scenes, Jean-Simeon Chardin, whose paintings Vollon collected.
