Catalogo generale, Florence, 1979, cat. no. P1832. William Williamson of Blackburn Hall, Middle Street, Deal, along with his wife Phyllis, had been an avid collector since their marriage in 1937. The Williams moved to Deal in 1968 following William's retirement from the advertising agency he had founded after the war, in London's West End. They bought the seventeenth-century Queen Anne House in Middle Street, where they housed their collection of fans, Victorian china, dolls and paintings, until 1980, when they bought Blackburn Hall in Middle Street and converted it to the Deal Society Heritage Centre and Victoriana Museum. Following the death of Phyllis in 1987, William sold Queen Anne House and moved into Blackburn Hall where he remained with his collection until his death in 1989. Shortly before, William donated his unique collection to Dover Museum's care.
