Current Accession Number GV28
Subject figure; landscape

Material oil on canvas
Acquisition Details Bequeathed by Richard Glynn Vivian 1911.
Publications Catalogue of the Collection of Oil and Watercolour Paintings, Miniatures and Drawings, Glynn Vivian Art Gallery, [Swansea], 1913, cat. no. 28, as by Caravaggio; Wright, C., Old Master Paintings in Britain, London, 1976, p. 32, as by Caravaggio.
Notes Inscriptions on the back read: 'Cangiagio (Luca Cambiaso)'; and 'By Cangiagio/ Neapolitan Painter/ (Luca Cambiaso)'. Why and when the change in attribution from Cambiaso to Caravaggio came about is not clear, though neither seems particularly likely. The original dating of sixteenth century is perhaps a bit early, and is more likely the first half of the seventeenth century. It has been suggested that this work could be Venetian. Possible artists have been suggested, namely Nosadella and Pellegrino, but these cannot be verified.
