Title Study for the Sacrifice of Jephthah
Collection Hastings Museum and Art Gallery
Artist Mazzoni, Sebastiano (Italian painter, architect, poet, ca.1611-1678)
Date Earliest probably 1655
Date Latest about 1660
Description In this study Mazzoni used the grouping of figures as a compositional device. The pointing left hand of the figure in the right corner effectively directs the eye into the centre of the painting where Jephthah is placed near the altar. The loose, sweeping brush-strokes convey the sudden movement of the figures, whose gestures express the heightened emotion of the scene.
