George Edward Nuttal (1856 - 1901) was the husband of Alice Ann Nuttal, who would bequeath his collection to the town of Accrington in her will, in accordance with his wishes, in 1925. He was the son of an engraver, educated at Church Kirk school, and entered into the employ of Messrs. F. Steiner & Co. Ltd. as a boy. He was soon promoted junior clerk, due to a prolific talent for figures. He became the Algerian traveller for the firm, in 1890 the joint manager, and in 1892 the sole manager. He then rapidly expanded the business, acquiring the Foxhill Banks, Sunnyside, and Hagg works in 1897. He travelled widely over Europe, Germany, Turkey, France, and was a fluent French speaker, presumably an opportunity which allowed him to amass such an extensive collection of French and Belgian art.
