Artist Attributed to Flemish School
Previously attributed to Verspronck, Johannes Cornelisz. (Dutch painter, ca.1606-1662)

Date Latest probably 1675
Description Formerly attributed to Johannes Verspronck, this small painting bears no resemblance to the work of this formal portrait painter. In style, it is much more akin to seventeenth-century Flemish painters such as Rubens or Jordaens. Its subject relates to the northern followers of Caravaggio, such as Terbruggen and Honthorst, who painted pictures of women and young boys playing musical instruments. These musicians are sometimes scantily clad and address the viewer in a provocative manner, reflecting contemporary interest in the power of music to move men's souls to emotion.
