Artist Poorter, Willem de (Dutch painter, 1608-after 1648)

Date Latest possibly about 1645
Description Having heard about the wisdom of Solomon and the magnificence of his court, the Queen of Sheba determined to witness them for herself. She arrived before him with numerous attendants bearing gifts of great riches, as depicted in this painting. The style is typical of Willem de Poorter's religious images. His dramatic use of light and shade, as well as the textures portrayed on the figures' fine robes is reminiscent of Rembrandt's works, with whom he is thought to have trained while in Leiden. The fine detail also hints at the influence of the Leiden fijnschilders.
