|Title||Mountain Landscape with Figures and a Hawking Party|
|Collection||Mount Edgcumbe House|
Previously attributed to Edema, Gerard Van (Dutch painter, ca.1652-ca.1700)
|Date Earliest||possibly about 1650|
|Date Latest||possibly about 1675|
|Description||This small landscape is one of a pair previously attributed to Gerard Van Edema. The size, colouring, composition, technique and subject matter of the two paintings are nonetheless all strikingly different to his other ascribed works, and are unlikely to be from his hand. Both works show fictitious neoclassically composed landscapes. This one appears particularly Italianate in its graceful mountain vista and the architecture of the town in the valley. The size of the composition and the fine detail portrayed, for example in the figures of the hawking party, are reminiscent of seventeenth-century Dutch 'cabinet' paintings.|
