Title A Carnival Scene
Collection Mount Edgcumbe House
Artist Italian School
Date Earliest possibly about 1870
Date Latest possibly about 1880
Description The specific context of this carnival scene is unknown although certain aspects of the composition provide some information. The figures are mostly dressed in the costumes of the Italian theatrical tradition the Commedia dell'Arte, and often appear eighteenth century. The barrel organ providing the music, however, and the bright palette of the painting suggest a date during the second half of the nineteenth century. The Roman columns in the background and the prominent Italian tricolor are further patriotic references to Italian history. It is possible that the celebration is related to the country's unification which was eventually completed in 1871.
