Description This landscape is inspired by the Italian countryside, but may not relate to any specific site. It is attributed to Andrea Locatelli, an eighteenth-century follower of Claude Lorrain. He has concentrated on atmospheric effects and formal composition. A shady riverbank framed by a repoussoir tree on the right provides a cool place from which the river, the villa, and the distant mountains can be viewed. Two figures offer anecdotal detail. No narrative is attached to them. The precisely painted foliage and the saturated colours in the foreground contrast with the bluish tints of the mountains and the diaphanous sky in the distance.
