Description Head and shoulders portrait of Marguerite Degas, shown almost full face. She has brown hair parted in the middle and wears a blue dress with white lace collar. Marguerite has a serious, melancholy expression. Degas has used muted tones and a dark, greyish background. The right hand side of the face is in shadow. By painting the face large within a small canvas, Degas lends an air of intimacy to the portrait.
