Description A dark haired woman in black silk mourning wear stands in profile on a rocky shoreline, lost in thought. The sea can be seen in the distance. A strong wind blows her hair and she holds a closed black umbrella with a crystal globe handle and a white handkerchief in front of her. A few gulls can be seen in the cloudy sky. These details increase the sense of chill and loneliness. She wears a black dress with striped, black sleeves and a black hat with black feathers and a long diaphenous white ribbon. Her mourning jewellery includes a silver and jet cross around her neck, earrings made from black jet beads arranged in spirals, gold and pearl bracelets and gold, jet and pearl rings.
