Description This landscape is by the nineteenth-century painter Alfred Edouard Agenout van Bylandt. Born and trained in Brussels, van Bylandt spent some years travelling in Switzerland and Italy. He specialised in painting Italianate landscapes in a style that had been fashionable a century earlier, but which continued to appeal to many nineteenth-century collectors. Bylandt generally signed and dated his canvasses, as in this case. This example, which depicts a young woman on a donkey passing through hilly terrain with a small flock of sheep, was produced when van Bylandt was in his late twenties.
