Description Born in Haarlem to a family of painters, Philips Wouverman joined the thriving painters guild in the town in 1640. He specialised in landscape, although for him, it was a diverse genre that could incorporate battles, hunting and, as here, coastal scenes. Several of Wouverman's landscapes were reproduced as high quality engravings during his own lifetime. These found an enthusiastic market among Europe's print collectors, and doubtless enhanced the artist's reputation, making him one of the most renowned landscape painters of his day.
