Description This panel painting by German artist Carl Adolph Senff is a copy of a detail of the Virgin and Child in Raphael's altarpiece known as the Madonna di Foligno (about 1511-12) in the Vatican. The original had returned to Rome just four years before this painting was made, having been looted in 1799 by Napoleon's troops. It was one of many works by Raphael that Senff copied in the early nineteenth century for the tourists who visited the city. Another version of this work by Senff is in the Orangerie at Potsdam, which houses a large number of the artist's paintings.
