Description Oval portrait of Shakespeare in three-quarter profile based on the Chandos type. Figure wears black garment and plain white collar in-keeping with the Chandos Portrait (National Portrait Gallery). Carved wood frame.

Notes X ray of painting by the Courtauld Institute shows that the head is painted on a separate section of canvas and superimposed on an already existing portrait, itself cut from a larger canvas. Bought by Henry Graves in Paris. Reputed to have been painted in Venice. Two labels on reverse. 1. 78; 2.WO 13807. Also stamped on reverse of panel 'Transcribed 1970'. Back Italian inscription (illegible).
