Description During the Siege of Paris, lasting from September 19, 1870 – January 28, 1871, which brought about French defeat in the Franco-Prussian War, the French people suffered a period of great famine and poverty. The painting, completed after the events occurred, ironically shows a boy as an improvised butcher, selling rats on the streets of Paris.
