Description The French painter Narcisse Chaillou was well known for his picturesque genre scenes, portraits and landscapes. This is a typical example showing the then common sceen of a travelling knifegrinder sharpening a knife on a foot-treadled grinding-stone watched by onlookers. Chaillou was a pupil of Hebert, Bonnat and Corot, and exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français and at the Salon de Paris.
