Description Half-length portrait of John Gwyn, the architect of the English Bridge, Shrewsbury, against a buff background. He wears a brown jacket and waistcoat and a white collar. He looks to the right as if his attention has been caught by something outside the picture frame. He holds a scroll in his left hand. The left hand is unfinished. John Gwyn R.A. was a native of Shrewsbury. He died in Worcester in 1776, and appears to have been about fifty-five years old when the portrait was painted (Manners and Williamson, 1920, p. 233).
