Description Alexander Henderson was one of the most important figures in the Church of Scotland in the early seventeenth century. He was one of the authors of the National Covenant, a document which pledged to maintain the 'true reformed religion' against the policies of Charles I. This portrait is taken from van Dyck's painting in the Scottish National Portrait Gallery (PG2227).

University Portraits (Talbot Rice, 1957) mentions a three quarter version of this painting at Duff House, Banffshire. This work was part of an 'extensive presentation [...] made in 1689 by the wife of Provost Prince (Sir Magnus Prince), §for the ornamentation of the library§ [...] Soon after, nine other portraits were presented by Sir Robert Sibbald, botanist and physician (1641 - 1722).'
