Description Leon y Escosura was born at Oviedo. He studied at the Academy in Madrid and under J. L. Gerome in Paris, where he spent much of his life painting historical and costume pictures in the style of Meissonier. He visited New York several times to paint portraits and local subjects. In America he associated with Samuel P. Avery, an influential art dealer and founder of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
