Description This portrait was commissioned to commemorate Arthur Capel's appointment as Lord Lieutenant of Ireland. The portrait follows the style of Lely that was popular in the Stuart court in the late seventeenth century. Arthur Capel turns to look out at the viewer over his left shoulder. This movement creates a strong and striking pose, while the plain background effectively emphasises the subject's presence.
