Alternative Title Self-Portrait of the Artist at Work
Collection Watford Museum
Artist After Vigée-LeBrun, Elisabeth Louise (French painter, 1755-1842)
Date Earliest about 1790
Date Latest about 1810
Description In this self-portrait Vigée Le Brun is shown at work on a portrait of Marie Antoinette. The self-portrait was begun shortly after the artist arrived in Italy in 1790. A second version was commissioned by the Earl of Bristol shortly after the artist's arrival in Rome later that year. The self-portrait demonstrates Vigée-LeBrun's popularity as well as her loyalty to the French royal family, a loyalty which had prompted her flight to Italy in 1790. The original and the second version of this portrait have been highly popular since Vigée-LeBrun completed them and they have inspired a number of high-quality copies; this is closest to the second version.
