Description The Holy Family are shown under a group of trees on a bank. Saint Joseph rests his head on his left hand, while adoring the infant Christ, who is sitting on his mother's lap. Two angels with garlands fly above them. The colouring and elongated forms of the figures follows the late Mannerist style in which Wtewael worked. This composition, based on observation of natural detail and motifs invented by the artist, reflects the shift that was occurring in seventeenth-century painting, away from Mannerism towards more naturalistic representation.
