Notes This work was purchased with another by Wellcome's agent Peter Johnston-Saint and they came from Raas, Pau in Southern France. Humphrey Wine of the National Gallery, London thinks that the other work may have been painted in Southern France as the painting is not very 'French' in appearance. It is a pair with The Clyster in Use, 45047i. Nothing was found in the diaries of Peter Johnston-Saint known as Captain Saint for this date.
