Artist After Teniers, David, II (Flemish painter, 1610-1690)
Date Earliest 1652
Date Latest possibly 1750
Description An old peasant has come to the dentist's house. On the table can be seen bottles and potions. Although dentists, like doctors, were often seen as quacks and tooth pulling was often a fairground attraction, this scene is remarkably restrained and sympathetic and lacks the customary group of gawping peasants. This painting is a copy of an oil painting by David Teniers the Younger, dated 1652, in Manchester City Art Gallery.
Current Accession Number 44639i
Former Accession Number P 2916/1938
Subject figure; interior; still life; everyday life
Measurements 21.0 x 16.5 cm cm (estimate)
Material oil on panel
Acquisition Details Bequeathed by Henry Solomon Wellcome 1936.
Provenance Sale, Christie's, London, nd.
Notes The accession card records that the work was purchased at Christie's but gives no date. The Wellcome file shows that this is a smaller version of another painting by Teniers which is larger in size and has more figures and objects in it. The original is in Manchester City Art Gallery, (1979.506) and is dated and signed. It is oil on panel and has a picture on the wall bearing the signature and date. It is 32.7 x 46.8 cm. A photo copy of a work by Danish artist Wilhelm Marstrand (1810-1873) is similar in style both in term of stylisation, dress and subject matter.
