Description A central scene from the comedy The Provok'd Wife by Sir John Vanbrugh. Garrick as Sir Brute dressed in his wife's clothes during a drunken escapade. The watch holding sticks and lanterns trying to arrest him for causing a disturbance. Garrick changed the original story which had Sir Brute dressed as a clergy man in order to poke fun at the exaggerated female fashions at the time. Garrick wears a pink bonnet and a yellow figured silk dress with a huge pannier which rises up to reveal his leg. The painting was commissioned by Garrick and shows the cast who performed the play at the Drury Lane Theatre, London on 18 April 1763. The roles of the watchmen are played by Henry Vaughan (a brother of Hannah Prichard), Thomas Hull, Thomas Clough, William Parsons, Thomas Phillips and Mr. Watkins. After exhibition in 1765, the finished picture hung in the dining room of Garrick's house.
