Description

Although a contemporary of the Realists and the Impressionists, Monticelli believed, like the Romantics, that art should involve fantasy and imagination and be infused with personal feeling. This is seen most clearly in the many paintings of fêtes that he painted.

Monticelli himself lived in poor circumstances throughout his life. The beautiful women, parks and luxury he painted were drawn from his dreams - not from his daily life. It is perhaps surprising to know that for most of his life Monticelli did not attempt to exhibit at the Paris Salon, saying he did not care about official approval. In 1880 through Cézanne's intervention Monticelli finally had a painting exhibited there.
