Description

Troyon is not an artist who is well known today, but during the second half of the 19th century he had an international reputation. By 1860 his works could be seen in London, Vienna, Brussels, Antwerp and The Hague. Associated with the Barbizon School, Troyon was famous for paintings like Landscape and Cattle, which depict domestic animals - usually cows and sheep - in a landscape setting.

The decisive moment in his career had come in 1847 when, during a visit to Holland, he saw the work of the 17th century animal painters Aelbert Cuyp and Paulus Potter. He immediately began to incorporate domestic animals into his own landscapes. It was with such paintings that Troyon was to win fame and fortune. With its low horizon line and flat landscape this painting clearly shows the influence of the Dutch artists.
