Description

In this tiny oil, a young peasant girl in a blue pinafore, stands barefoot under a tree, holding a staff. Behind her a dark tangle of tree trunks suggests that she is standing at the edge of a forest; we are given no hint of a village nearby. Her face partly shaded by her hood, she looks out directly at us, the viewer, quiet, reflective, and perhaps troubled.

From an inscription on the back, we know that this work was painted in April 1849, when Millet was living in Paris. As Millet never seems to have worked outside - even after his move to Barbizon in June 1849 - this is probably an imaginary scene, not a peasant drawn from real life. Small paintings, such as this, were destined for the private collector and were amongst the first of Millet's works to find an appreciative audience.
